Alfred E. Neuman
By now you've learned about the passing of the great Al Jaffee, cartoonist for Mad Magazine for 65(!) years. I remember him best for the Fold-Ins appearing at the back of the mag. However, being a little kid, the gags/messages revealed when folding the back cover of my uncle's Mads were typically over my head. Here's a pleasant video in which Mr. Jaffee explains the origins of the Fold-In.

When it came to comic magazines, Cracked was more my speed, and I, a budding artist, idolized the late John Severin, contributing and cover artist for 45 years. He, an absolute master of pen and ink, is not nearly as famous as he ought to be. I would read the entire issue of each magazine, also enjoying other artists' work, but then I would return to Severin's pages and attempt to emulate his work. I never came close to creating anything even 2% as accomplished as Severin's tiniest, dashed-off bits, but I didn't care because I was interacting with Art.

One minute you think you're a reasonably well-informed musicologist (at least regarding the things you like), the next minute you discover that you know NOTHING. But... that's OK! Because that means there's still more precious musical metal to be mined from the soil, so to speak. Case in point, I was visiting my brother, and he took me to the used music store in his town. Reverberating off the walls of the establishment of compact discs was some righteous retro rock. I didn't recognize the song being played, but I instantly loved it, as asking the proprietor about it, he informed me it was Mountain, who I had, all my life, stupidly dismissed as "just that Mississippi Queen band". (Unrelated, my friend Nate, an artist of the finer variety, likes to playfully refer to any pair of earbuds, no matter who manufactured them, as Dudios, the name of a cheap, Chinese brand. Just a few days ago I listened to Dreams of Milk and Honey through a pair of Apple Dudios, and I heard nuances I'd never heard before. NUANCES, MAN. I thought you'd like to know.)
