Searching for a clean and legible face for my smartwatch, I discovered one based on the Vostok Komandirskie, a Russian wristwatch from way back. I liked it! And I added it. (Don’t cancel me, it’s great utilitarian design, and Vlad P. didn’t see a dime.)
However, a little later, once I discovered that the very timepiece I was emulating is still being manufactured and sold, I began losing interest in lithium-powered wrist-based extensions of one's smartphone and became fascinated once again with the mechanical originals that smartwatches are often weakly faking. And, of course, it wasn’t long before I realized I wanted to create my own.
Enter HORROR VVATCHES. Please allow the video to explain the name:
There are a lot of beautiful timepieces out there for all purposes and tastes, but methinks there are too few that are curiously esoteric and pleasantly busy, and I aim to remedy that. What’s my plan? There are a couple of paths to take…
I partner with someone with experience in the field, someone with all the connections, someone who says, “Hey, I dig your busy, esoteric vibe!"
I go at it alone, booking a flight to China to meet a manufacturer, more than likely having to rely on crowdfunding to bring VVatch Number One into existence.
I become engaged as a designer with an established wristwatch company, helping to create a new line of product, not necessarily my HORROR vision but something in that abstruse realm.
VVhatever happens, it’s so far been quite satisfying. Fun even! And if I find success, maybe I won’t start replacing every W with two V’s, but I make no promises.
P.S. Though I find hands spinning around a dial to be the richer time-telling experience, I’m not against digital watches, and those liquid crystals be on the drawing board too…
Thanks kindly for taking the time to read this! Pun intended.
As a first round i would use a service like namoki mods to get some cases, bracelets and movements, and create the watch faces and hands yourself to see the real thing in the real world before you do anything more involved.
I’ve been working through a project to create watches that never existed, so ive been down this rabbit hole. Let me know if you ever want to talk.
